Walking in Memory of Jamie 💔

Darkness into Light 2026

This coming Saturday, May 9th, like many others I will be taking part in Darkness Into Light, the annual walk organised by Pieta House. It’s a walk that means something different to everyone who takes part, but for me it is deeply personal.

Last year, we lost my dad to suicide; a devastating loss that changed our lives forever.  It was a time filled with shock, grief and questions that felt impossible to answer. Losing someone in that way changes a family forever, and navigating the aftermath can feel incredibly isolating.

During that time, Pieta House became an important source of support for my family. Their counselling and bereavement services helped us process what had happened and gave us a space where we could talk openly about our grief. When everything felt overwhelming, they provided compassion, understanding and guidance that helped us to navigate through the heaviness of the days, weeks and months that followed.

Taking part in Darkness Into Light is my way of honouring my dad, supporting my family, and recognising the incredible work Pieta continues to do for people across Ireland. The walk symbolises something powerful — moving from darkness into light — and for many families like mine, that journey is very real.

By walking, I hope to help raise awareness about suicide and the importance of support services like Pieta. No family should have to face these experiences alone, and organisations like Pieta ensure that people have somewhere to turn in their darkest moments.

If you are able to support the event, donate, or simply start a conversation about mental health, it can make a real difference.

If I could ask anything of anyone , it would be this:  Please check on your loved ones, check on yourselves, speak to your friends, be kind to others and don’t be afraid to say that you’re not ok. It’s ok not to be ok and we often don’t realise that the toughest battles people face are often the battles they fight with themselves.

This walk is for my dad, for my family, and for everyone who needs support from this amazing organisation.

Please remember: you are not alone.
