Sunrise Run for Dad

I’m taking part in Darkness Into Light 2026 to support Pieta and bring hope to people affected by suicide and self-harm.

Every day, people find themselves in moments of deep distress. They feel overwhelmed, isolated, or unsure where to turn. Pieta is there for them, offering free, professional support at a time when it matters most.

Events like Darkness Into Light are vital. Around 80% of Pieta’s funding comes from public fundraising, including this event, proudly supported by Electric Ireland. This fundraising helps keep Pieta’s suicide and self-harm prevention services free and accessible for anyone who needs them, anywhere in Ireland.

By donating to my fundraiser, you are helping to ensure that someone in crisis can reach a trained therapist, be listened to, and feel less alone in that moment.

A €24 donation could help answer two calls to Pieta's 24-hour Crisis Helpline, moments that can make a real difference and even save lives.

A word from Rose

I have been so moved by your incredible support and kind messages. Thank you so much for your donations. Pieta is mainly funded by the public so they are vital to it's life saving work. Your effort will help to keep their crisis support open 24 hours a day.

On that February morning 31 years ago we had no support available to us from any specialised services. If it had not been for the unwavering support of family and friends, I know for sure we would not have coped as a family at all.

The Irish and wider community in Birmingham came together with us for a beautiful service for Dad before we flew him home to lay him to rest in the Sperrin mountains in Tyrone.

As we landed at Belfast Airport, all of Dad's family, close friends and neighbours and also mums family from Clare, were there to meet him to accompany him home. It really was a sight to behold.

Some of the money you have raised will go to funding research focusing on the lived experience of those bereaved by suicide. This is long overdue and extremely welcome. This will help generate government funding to provide the most effective supports for families experiencing such sudden and complex loss.

The HSE (Health Service Executive) now recognise Suicide Bereavement as a significant public health issue. This is also most welcome. More recent research (very rare 31 years ago) shows that the Psychological and Physical health impacts of those bereaved are in fact very far reaching across the Life span.

As the stigma continues to lift, a more specialised, trauma informed approach will be a welcome change.

And so....Dad will always live on in us, we are his legacy especially his kind, warm, intelligent and fun loving granddaughters.

It was 31 years ago, a life time for some and yet most of the time it just feels like yesterday.

A message from Rose

As you all know I lost my dad to suicide 31 years ago. It was out of the blue one Monday morning and I have thought about him every single day since. Our lives were shattered that day but it did make us a more kind and empathetic family with a deep understanding about the complex grief associated with suicide. My lovely dad Jim was a very kind, warm and funny man and so I will be running 5km at sunrise on the 9th May for him. So please help me save some lives and donate if you can. Thanks so much Rose
