I'm taking part in Darkness Into Light 2024, proudly supported by Electric Ireland, on Saturday, May 11th to raise vital funds for Pieta and to support people affected by suicide and self-harm.

85% of Pieta's funding comes from fundraising events like Darkness Into Light.

Why I believe in the cause

At the age of 12 I became a victim of childhood sexual abuse by a family friend. At the age of 15 I was raped. These events began my path into self-harm and suicide attempts. I began self-harming at 13. I made my first attempt at unaliving myself at 15.

I personally know the stigma those face with self-harm. For me it was a deflection of the pain and torment going on inside my head. For years I have had people ask me about my scars. I have since covered them with a heartbeat tattoo. My daily reminder that I am still here. I am still fighting. I am a survivor!

Not everyone makes it though, and sadly my cousin unalived himself just this past September.

I am taking part in this walk as this has affected me personally. Has affected my children, my family and so many others. It is not talked about. It is often the "dirty secret" and those of us who struggle are left to feel shame and judgment.
